Phenomenal X (Hard Knocks #1) by Michelle A. Valentine

Rating 4.5/5 stars
Publication Date April 22, 2014

Blurb:

Good Girl. Notorious Bad-Boy. One Phenomenal Love.

From the mean streets of Detroit rises the newest superstar of professional wrestling, Xavier Cold, better known as Phenomenal X. His muscular physique makes men cower before him and women lose their minds with desire.

Anna Cortez is fresh out of college and naive to the harsh realities of the real world. Tired of living under the thumb of her conservative family, she defies them when she accepts a job as the assistant to wrestling’s most notorious bad-boy. Phenomenal X has an animalistic nature that even good girl Anna finds hard to resist.

One night forced to share a bed in a sold-out hotel, lines blur between them and they quickly learn that one lustful night changes everything and neither one of them will ever be the same.

Review:

Why did the end had to be cliffy? How long will I have to wait for the second book? What's going to happen next? Why did Xavier have to be book boyfriend and addiction material? Why can't anyone she Rex for who he truly is? Those questions where in my mind when I finished the book.

For some write reason I keep linking the book to Katy Evan's Real, do if you are a fan of the latter check Phenomenal X. If you are not please still check this book out.

Xavier's grandma and Anna's father are very religious people and unfortunately the bad kind. Both of them are obsessed. If you are not a fan of books that contain religious parts you won't have a problem. I was sad because I can believe that some people out there is like that.

Anna is a lukewarm for me. She had potential to become a great and beloved character and I will be looking for that in book 2. I hope she will fight for Xavier and she will be strong. She has to face many obstacles and fight for what she loves.

Xavier could be my man. The truth is that I kept waiting for him to screw up and he sort of did. It was easy to understand why he acts the way he does after learning parts of his past. He needs to let go of the past and let Anna in. He has to stop his past from controlling him. He doesn't see himself as the person who he truly is, the one Anna sees in him. He needs redemption, a way to let go of what's haunting him and live a happily ever after with Anna.

I have lots of expectations for the second book. Why? A) The author had built the story nicely and usually the books get better and better and not the opposite. B) There is going to be a lot of drama, but I think the author will deliver it without making it over the top. A police arrests vengeful ex-PA, a person whose goal is set to winning the belt and will do everything in his power and something more to get what he wants and Xavier's past made this book very interesting so I think, now when a chance to explore them more exists things could he mind blowing. Michelle A. Valentin has set the bar high for this series.

What I didn't like, but totally understood was the self-promotion. Anna reads Rock the heart (another book by the same author). I get that dome of the readers will want to check the book out and the author will get a better paycheck, but for me it would have been better if Ana was reading a book from another author who happens to be Valentine's friends it the title of the book was written on a note at the end of the book.

Wolf in Gucci Loafers (Tales of the Harker Pack #2) by Tara Lain

Rating 4/5 stars
Publication Date: April 16, 2014

Blurb:

Socialite Lindsey Vanessen wants someone to love who will love him back — an impossibility for a gay, half-human, half-werewolf. Too aggressive for humans, too gay for wolves, and needing to protect the pack from human discovery, Lindsey tries to content himself with life as a successful businessman. But when someone starts kidnapping members of wealthy families, Lindsey meets tough cop Seth Zakowsy—the hunky embodiment of everything Lindsey wants but can't have.

Seth has never been attracted to flamboyant men. What would the guys in the department think of Lindsey? But intrigue turns to lust when he discovers Lindsey’s biting, snarling passion more than matches his dominant side. It might mean a chance at love for a cop in black leather and a wolf in Gucci loafers.

Review:

In the beginning I wasn't sure if Lindsey's personality would be an off for me. I am not used to his type of behavior. It's not like I have a problem with that, it's just that my usual male characters in an M/M romance are more like Seth than Lindsey. His personality is more colorful. He is the kind of gay guy that you can spot from miles away. His feminine side is more feminine than mine and as said said "He is darling this and darling that" Turns out that Lindsey is a sweetheart

Seth is the total opposite if Lindsey. If you saw him you wouldn't have guessed a thing, unless he wanted you to. And yet he and Lindsey are perfect for each other. Opposites attract....
Jazz is a lovely character. I loved him a little and I want to see him in another book.

I am a fan of M/M romance so there is no chance I wouldn't have loved that aspect of the book. There is nothing better. The love scenes between the couple could have been steamier and sexier. But they didn't disappoint. I would have liked a little more focus on the research for the bad guy. Before Lindsey finds out who is behind everything the author starts dropping hints about that person's identity. I am not sure if that adds something in the whole reading experience or removes from it.

Excerpt:

Lindsey laughed and walked over to the end table beside his couch, grabbed the remote, and pushed Play. Piano music filled the room. “Hmm, the Chopin Piano Concerto for striptease? Maybe not.” He clicked again to Cher lamenting gypsies, tramps and thieves. “Now my orientation is showing.” Another click and La Babs crooned her heart out. Perfect.

He strolled to the center of the room, grabbed his silk neck scarf, and slowly pulled it from around his neck. He fluttered it a couple of times, then gripped it in his teeth as he shrugged out of the green leather jacket and tossed it on top of Seth’s clothes. He’d worn a black form-fitting sweater underneath, which he gripped at the hem, and, as he ground his hips, he pulled it one tantalizing centimeter at a time up his body. For a moment the sweater covered his eyes, but when he peeked out below, Seth stared at him with a glassy gaze and parted lips. He threw the sweater on the pile and, still biting the scarf, ran its ends over his shoulders and pecs.

Seth’s stroking got serious. “Man, you are beautiful. Graceful and slim with all these cool muscles teasing under the surface.”
Lindsey drew his brows together. “Too far below the surface, if you ask me.”

“Nah. Just right.”

Lindsey rested his hands on his waistband and did a big hip roll. As he bumped forward, he unbuttoned the fly and slid the zipper of his black jeans just far enough to let the fat head of his penis peep over. “Peekaboo.”

Seth shook his head. “You are one mass of sexy contradictions.”

As Lindsey lowered the zipper farther over his briefs, Seth pumped harder. Lindsey shook a finger. “Uh-uh, don’t start without me.”

Seth tightened his grip but stopped pumping.

With the zipper down, Lindsey hooked his thumbs in the top of the pants and pulled them over his hips. No sliding—they were too tight. Still holding the scarf between his teeth like a rose, he slid the pants to his ankles, stepped out of his Gucci loafers, and then out of the pants.

His cock strained the elastic on the boxer briefs, and he slid the tip of his finger around and around the exposed head of his dick.

Seth smiled. “Can I do that for you?”

“Very soon.”

He turned his back to the hunk on his bed and looked over his shoulder with a flutter of lashes. Good, he was paying strict attention. Lindsey placed his hands on the small of his own back, slid them into the tight teal briefs, and dragged them over his butt. Two quick twerks, then he slipped them to his feet, kicked with one foot, and they flew through the air and landed on a floor lamp.

Seth laughed. “I’m dyin’ over here. This may be more of a dance than I bargained for.”

Lindsey gazed over his shoulder. “If you don’t like the floor show, sir, we’ll refund your cover charge.”

Seth held up one hand—the other still gripped his cock. “No complaints. Not one.”

Still with his back to Seth, Lindsey pulled the scarf from his teeth and tied a strategic bow. As Babs sang something about being a woman in love, Lindsey raised one arm above his head, twirled on one foot, and presented his cock forward tied in a lavender silk scarf.

Seth sputtered. “I don’t know whether to laugh or come!”

Excerpt:

I shrug and feel this could’ve been handled a month or so ago when we were told we’d be performing. “It’s not just my band; I think a name should encompass both of us.”

Sam throws her hands up in the air before picking up her cup of coffee. “Pick something. I don’t care, but just make it good,” she says before raising the paper cup to her red painted lips. There’s never a chance of mistaking what cups are hers around here, anything that has lip paint on them, regardless of the color, belong to her. My grandma says she must go through a tube of lipstick a week.

“What about 4225 West?” I blurt out.
“I like it,” Harrison says as he hits his drums.
“What does it even mean?”
“Um…” I run my hand through my hair. “The date and time we’re playing?”
“Are you asking me, Liam?” Sam says, incredulously.
“N-no,” I stammer. “I think that should be our name.”
“What’s the West part?”
My last name so she can find me, I want to say, but don’t.

Wind Raven (Agents of the Crown #3) by Regan Walker

Rating: 4/5 stars
Publication Date: March 10 2014

Blurb:

Ordered by the Prince Regent into the Caribbean, English sea captain and former privateer Jean Nicholas Powell has no time for women onboard the Wind Raven, especially not Tara McConnell. The impudent American forced herself aboard, and so she’ll get more than she bargained for: Instead of a direct sail to Baltimore, she’ll join their quest to investigate a rampaging pirate, the infamous Roberto Cofresi. But the hoyden thinks she can crew with his men, and though he bans her from the rigging, Nick is captivated watching her lithe, luscious movements on deck. Facing high seas, storms, cutthroats and the endless unknown, he must protect his ship, his passenger, his crew. But on this voyage, with this woman, there is a greater danger: to his heart.

Review:

Almost all the storyline happens on a ship so forget the ballrooms and the trips to Gretna Green. The heroine is feisty and not a delicate wallflower so I found some comfort in that. Nicholas while is not a scoundrel, is not an inexperienced man either.

And he acts like a " typical" man when it comes to matters of love. You know what I mean. It's that time when a man thinks that the lady knows his feelings about her and doesn't think that he has to tell them to her or when he proposes to her and doesn't think that there has to be love in a marriage. In both cases I want to hit the hero.

I liked Tara more than Nicholas. I feel as if I know her, but Nicholas is still a mystery. The story was good and had some very intriguing surprises. I can't believe that I liked that pirate! The thought of his redemption crossed my mind more than once, but since we can't mess with history, so let him die.

AUTHOR BIO:

As a child Regan Walker loved to write stories, particularly about adventure-loving girls, but by the time she got to college more serious pursuits took priority. One of her professors thought her suited to the profession of law, and Regan realized it would be better to be a hammer than a nail. Years of serving clients in private practice and several stints in high levels of government gave her a love of international travel and a feel for the demands of the “Crown” on its subjects. Hence her romance novels often involve a demanding Prince Regent who thinks of his subjects as his private talent pool. - See more at: http://boroughspublishinggroup.com/authors/regan-walker#sthash.VGWphvvH.dpuf

Except:

“A fine fix we’re in,” Tara said, looking first at the captain and then at the night sky. The stars began to show themselves in the darkening canvas above, giving her the sense she stood on a precipice at an auspicious moment in time. It had only been a short while ago she had gained the insight she had now about the two of them. She should have realized the truth long ago.

“What do you mean?” he asked, coming up behind her, so close she could feel the heat of his chest. His warmth had always drawn her, and it was pulling her to him now like a strong undertow.

“Each of us withheld from the other the one thing we wanted,” she remarked, staring into the night sky.

“And what would that be?” He put his hands on her arms, drawing her back against his chest. She shivered with his touch but allowed it, while fighting the urge to turn and fall into his arms.

“You wanted my body and, fool that I am, I wanted your heart.”

He spun her around so fast her vision blurred. “My heart? You wanted my heart?”

“Yes, but I cannot seem to touch it.” His eyes carried a look of astonishment. “Well, you can keep it,” she said emphatically. “I don’t want it anymore. And you shall never have me!”

He stared at her for only a moment. “Oh, yes, I will.” As if she had defied one of his many orders and he was having none of it, he brought his mouth down on hers in a kiss that was claiming. One of his hands closed on her nape and his other arm wrapped tightly around her waist, holding her to him, trapping her with his powerful strength.

Synopsis
He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

Excerpt:

Claudia shrugged and pulled down at her yellow tee. “Not my problem. Eduardo is nice but Ricardo is really nice.”

“How did it happen?” I asked, kinda wanting the sordid details.

She was coy. “The way it usually happens.”

“Did you make the first move?”

Another shrug. “Why not?”

I swear, a shrug and a “why not?” were the Spaniards’ go-to answer for everything.

“Well, then I guess it seems safe—and a little boring now—to tell you that I have a crush on someone.”

Her brows quirked up. “Other than Mateo?”

“What?”

“You are sleeping with Mateo, no?”

“WHAT?!”

“No?”

“No!” I exclaimed, appalled. “Why does everyone keep thinking that?”

“Because you are always together,” she said simply. She took a sip of wine. “The attraction is very obvious. So, I figured you must be sleeping together.”

“He’s married!”

“Yes, but you are not.”

I shook my head adamantly. “It’s wrong. I don’t want to be the other woman. I’ve seen my dad go for the other woman, and I can’t put Mateo’s daughter through that,” I said. “Or his wife,” I quickly added.

“That doesn’t mean that you can’t have feelings for anyone else.”

“Yes, it does mean that.”

“Maybe you are meant to be together.”

“We’re not! There isn’t even a together. We’re just friends. I haven’t done anything about it, and so far my feelings are totally one-sided.”

Claudia got up off the couch and brought a pack of cigarettes out of her front jean pocket. “If you think it is on the one side, you have not seen the way he looks at you.”

She walked over to her small patio table and pulled out a chair. I got up and stormed after her, my nerves dancing excitedly.

“What do you mean, the way he looks at me?” I asked, lowering my voice in case there were people around listening. I felt like bouncing off the walls.

She slid the ashtray toward her as I sat down. “You do not see it. But I do. I think everyone does. He looks at you like…like you’re his favorite food.”

“Favorite food?”

She lit her cigarette. “Yes. You’re like his favorite food in the whole world. He wants to have you, eat you, devour you. He thinks about you all the time, craves you. But he cannot have you for one reason or another. Perhaps you upset his stomach. Maybe he is on a diet, yes? All he wants is a taste, but he cannot even have that. That is how he looks at you.”

I sat there, stunned, as some of her smoke blew in my face. That’s how Mateo looked at me? Like he wanted to eat me? I was pretty sure that’s how I looked at him. Just last night I was contemplating nibbling on his earlobes.

“And yes,” she said, leaning closer to me, a small smile on her lips, “that is also how you look at him.” Great, a mind reader. “But you are more subtle about it. You try not to let everyone know. But, we know.”

“There is nothing to know,” I reminded her, poking the table with my finger for emphasis. “We are not sleeping together. He is married. I have a crush. That is it. The end of the story.”

“A crush?” she questioned. “Vera, I think you’re in love with him.”

No fucking way. Not love. That did not happen with me, not ever and not now.

“You can’t fall in love in a week,” I told her heatedly.

“You can fall in love in a second,” she said with a snap of her fingers. “The heart has no regard for time.”

With that sobering thought, Claudia told me about her ex-boyfriend and how they fell in love at first sight then took the conversation back to Ricardo and their exploits. I envied her so badly right then and there. She could fawn over Ricardo, kiss him, fuck him, and no one would ever bat an eye. It was okay for them to be together. It wasn’t forbidden.

I gulped the rest of the wine and left her apartment, heading back to reception to meet Cristina for my next one-on-one, my mind and heart and hormones all over the place. Lo and behold, Mateo was walking up the path toward me.

He was on the phone, smiling.

His shirt was off and slung over his shoulder, exposing his bare chest, abs, and arms.

Holy fuck.

For a moment, I was sure that time had stopped. Or maybe ever single nerve, cell, vein, bone, muscle in my body just slowed as I took him all in.

From his thick-veined forearms to his sculpted shoulders and broad chest peppered with neatly-trimmed chest hair, to his six-pack abs, he had, by far, the best body I’d ever seen on a man. He kept himself in fine-ass shape, looking more like a young athlete than anything else. He and David Beckham had more in common than I thought, although David’s skin tone wasn’t as mesmerizing. Mateo’s color was amazing, just beautiful, this dark, golden bronze that covered him everywhere. I wanted so badly to just touch him, to lick the sheen of sweat off his skin. I bet he tasted like victory.

And to think this was the man that Claudia said wanted to taste me.

I really, really wanted to believe her.

Meanwhile, I was just standing there like I was melting into a puddle of myself. I clamped my mouth shut as he walked past and I heard him say into the phone, “No, mi tesorito, it was easy, I didn’t injure myself.” He was beaming, talking about the game, to his wife. To his tesorito. And he called their relationship complicated? This was complicated.

He winked at me in acknowledgement, his smile becoming broader. I tried to smile back but it wouldn’t come. I just stared at him, feeling stupid, foolish, and strangely rejected. In a perfect world I may have been his favorite food, but it still wasn’t what he got served every day. I turned around and walked down the hill, my heart feeling like a pincushion.

“Vera!” I heard him call out from behind. I stopped and nervously glanced over my shoulder. He was holding the phone’s receiver to his chest, grinning at me. “I need to ask you your question.”

“What?” I asked, hoping it was quick.

“Who is your favorite Spaniard here?”

Seriously?

And yet I couldn’t lie to him.

“You,” I said, more to myself than to him. Then I turned around and walked away as quickly as I could.

A Note from Laura:
Hey guys! I am so excited about Easy’s book that I can hardly wait for August to get here! Easy’s character was a total surprise to me. When I initially plotted out the series, there were four surviving members of the Army Special Forces team and therefore I planned for and sold four book in the series. But then, when I sat down to write Hard As It Gets, all of a sudden the story demanded there were actually five guys, and Edward “Easy” Cantrell was born. And I’m so glad! Because Easy’s character is a totally tortured hero, which I adore writing! So I’m super happy that we added his story and this novella into the series, and I can’t wait for you to learn about Easy in Hard to Hold On To! Is it August yet??? xo, Laura

Weak Without Him (Weakness, #2) by Lyra Parish

Release Date: April 2 2014
Rating: 4/5 stars

Blurb:

"Love is an emotion that will destroy you if you let it. It can ruin your life or create a new one. Jealousy isn't much different."

Jennifer Downs treads in dangerous waters.
Finnley Felton is unaware.
With the help of Lady Luck, they will make it through.
Or will they?

Texas is nothing compared to Vegas but among the bright lights and busy streets, Jennifer discovers who she is. Her life has changed, and for better or worse, she continues to live like tomorrow will never come.

Sabotage. Hatred. Betrayal.

Although love is beautiful and kind, it comes with consequences.

Jennifer finds herself fighting. Fighting for her rights, for love, for Finnley, and for her life.

Hearts may be broken.
Lives will change.
But the ultimate question remains: can love win all?

Review:

Mixed feelings for this one. I was really pissed at Jennifer because she was always running away instead of trying to work things out with Finnley. That frustration was forgotten when things got really bad and I only remembered it later when I was writing the review. Finnley and Jennifer have a very powerful enemy who has some really strong motives and won't hesitate to do anything.

To say that Jennifer's future wasn't looking good is an understatement. Their enemy is crazy and powerful which is not a great combination, but it guarantees that the story will keep the reader's interest. Luke should get his own story, even though I lost some of my warm feelings for him during this story. He tried to be altruistic, but to me it seemed as if he decided you keep the truth to himself for his own selfish reasons. He should have said something to Finnley because he was miserable.

Giveaway time!

I know I have been MIA lately and I will be for some time, so I decided to do a little giveaway. I found out that I own 3 copies of Between The Lines and I thought why not give the other two? In this giveaway  I will give one of the two. The other books are either some of my favorites or a book that I stumbled upon this week.
