Review: Too Enchanting (The Lewis Cousins #4) by Bethany Lopez

Blurb:

When she was young, Serena Lewis was uprooted from the life she knew. Her parents took her from everything and everyone she loved, including her best friends… her cousins. Rebelling against the change, Serena became a young woman she knew her family wouldn’t like. Now that she's moving back home, she hopes to keep that part of herself in the past and become the woman she's meant to be.

Jed Monroe is a self-made man. Forced to grow up at a young age, he's always taken care of himself and worked to get what he needed. Working construction has given him stability, but working with wood is where his passion truly lies.

On the outside, petite and perfect Serena and rough and hardworking Jed have nothing in common. When Serena moves into the house next door, Jed is determined to ignore the sexy art gallery manager, who he just knows will be a pain in his ass.

But their shared loved of creating beauty from pain, along with the intangible chemistry that fires whenever they’re in the same space, forces them to dig beneath the surface to find their vulnerability. Jed will soon see that whether he likes Serena or not, she’s Too Enchanting to ignore.

Too Enchanting is the fourth in an all-new small town romance series by Bethany Lopez. Follow the Lewis cousins of Cherry Springs, the kind of place where there are festivals for every occasion and everyone knows your business, as they learn about love and loss.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I liked most of the book. I cannot remember where exactly I hit a bump and stopped reading it and I can only tell you that I stopped reading the story for two days. In that time I read other books, so it wasn't exactly me who had a problem. Maybe I got tired of waiting for Serena and Jed to become a thing. I am not sure though. Maybe it's because it took me some time to warm up to Serena since I didn't like her and her behavior much in the beginning. It's hard to enjoy a book where the heroine is not one of your favorite people. I warmed up to her eventually and I found myself enjoying the book. For me, this is not one of Bethany Lopez's best works, but it was still good enough. I liked Jed even if his temper was getting the best of him sometimes. No one can be perfect, right? I liked seeing all the cousins together and I got very invested in the couple of the next book. I smell marriage of inconvenience and I hope I am right. I will read that book as soon as the author writes it. Is it bad that I was very invested in Jasmine's story and not Serena's while I was reading the book? I hope not. Anyway, despite what I might have said, I would recommend the book.

Excerpt:
What in the heck was going on over at Jed's house?
All morning there had been a constant stream of women parading through his yard. The first woman I'd seen had been young, blonde, and beautiful, and I'd assume there was some sort of morning-after situation going on.
Which, for some reason, had my stomach tightening and my heart squeezing with something that felt like a combination of sorrow and anger ... which was silly, because I didn't even like Jed. There was no way I was jealous at the thought of him with some pretty young thing.
Except, that's what it had felt like.
But then, there'd been more women, of all ages, and I decided maybe the pretty young thing hadn't been his girlfriend, and there was something else going on.
But, what?
It was hard to tell from a few glances out my window, and I swear, Jed had almost caught me once, so I decided to do some weeding in my backyard. Sure, I kept my nice clothes on, and forgot my gloves, shovel, and whatever else you need to weed, so instead, I walked over to the privacy fence that stood between our yards and leaned against it.
I was just a woman enjoying the sunshine in her yard ... nothing wrong with that, right?
"The hard lines and smooth surface is really exceptional," a woman with a sultry voice was saying. "You must really work on it..."
My eyes widened as I imagined Jed next door, naked, or at least shirtless, while these women looked him over.
Was he a model? Did he have some sort of studio back there?
Or, was he into something more clandestine...
There was no denying he was attractive, if you were into tall, good-looking men who were too busy to shave and had eyes that seemed to see everything.
Maybe Jed was a gigolo, and all those women were his johns, or would it be janes, who were coming by for their weekly fix.
But, on a Sunday?
"I do," Jed answered. "Every chance I get I'm back here, honing my craft, trying to sculpt perfection."
I blinked. Wow, conceited much? I mean, sure, even with clothes on I could tell he had a nice body, but perfection? That was a little much.
"It shows," the woman said. "I bet it gets pretty hot out here..."
Needing to see what was going on, I hurried over to my bench and started pulling it to the fence. Once I had it in position, I stood up on it, crouching at first, then slowly standing up until I could peek over the top.
I just wanted a glance, to see what was really happening over there. Not that I wanted to see Jed naked, of course, I only needed to see for myself what the appeal was...

She’s the one girl I can’t have. A human. I’m a player, but there’s one girl I can’t have. The redhead who lights up the club every Saturday night. I want to pull her into the storeroom and claim her, but it wouldn’t be right. She’s too pure. Too fresh. Too passionate. Too human. When she learns my secret, my alpha orders me to wipe her memories. But I won’t do it. Still, I’m not mate material--I can’t mark her and bring her into the pack. What in the hell am I going to do with her?

Review:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Alpha's Desire is the sixth book in the Bad boy Alpha's series, but it can be read as stand-alone. This is my first book in the series (and I think by these authors too) and I had no problem getting into the story and the world these two authors created. I wanted to see more of the MC and the paranormal parts. It felt a lot like your everyday, contemporary romance and not like a paranormal or MC book. There were enough mentions of Jared's wolf, but we didn't see him long enough for my taste. I wanted more of that in order to feel like the book wasn't something like I had read before. I also wanted a little more danger considering everything that went on. For someone who has found out a very important secret aka the existence of paranormal creatures, Angelina had a very safe and free of trouble life. There is a threat in her life but is not threatening enough. The whole book felt like it was less. Angelina is a human and someone Jared can't have since wolves don't mate with humans and yet they have a thing going on from page one 'till the end. One of the best parts of the book was Jared. I liked him most of the time and I liked even more how he tried to change in order to become the person he thought was worthy of Angelina. Overall the story wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. For me something was missing in every aspect of the book, hence the 3.5-star rating and the reason I am rounding it down on Amazon and Goodreads to 3 stars.

The Consequence of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken Publication Date: March 26th, 2018 Genre: Contemporary Romance

CORejection_eBook_LowRes

You know the universe is trying to tell you something when you get struck by lightning, but only after getting hit on by the elderly, almost getting run over by a semi, and running into the one who got away. Why do they say it like that anyway? Like I accidentally lost her when she was the one that got in the car with my best friend and left me. The day after I proposed. We were eighteen. I wanted forever. She didn't. It's been ten years. I tried to move on, tried to get married, had that same wedding crashed by my now best friend who says the only way for me to stop pissing off the universe, is to gain closure with the one woman I can't forget. So I do it. I embark on a journey down memory lane that not only lands me in prison but on the receiving end of a fist fight in front of the entire town, this naturally happens after drunken pool sex, climbing the same girl's window, and getting threatened at gunpoint by her father. To say the universe is trying to tell me something anything, is a giant understatement. I just hope I survive the message. And then, I hope I survive her—again.

Review:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

If you are not familiar with the series like me, go and read first Max's book. That guy is hilarious and he was also the best part of this book. I swear every single time I laughed when I was reading this book was because of him. I simply loved him and I after I finish typing this review I will go and buy his book.

Second chance romances are not my thing and that was the reason I began my review with Max and not the happy couple from this book. Before you say anything, you should know that Rachel Van Dyken is one of the authors whose books I blindly read. They might tear my heart out sometimes, but I know I will love the ride. I have loved most of her books and I was willing to give a book that belongs in the second chances genre a chance. The result was me enjoying the book, but not loving it.

Jason and Maddy were a couple back in high school and Jason ended up proposing to her when they graduated. She accepted but broke his heart a couple of hours later. She broke things off and left the town with another man. She wasn't cheating on him though. Now, ten years later, she is back and they are trying to work things out as friends until Max gets a crazy idea. That guy should come with ten warnings.

To be honest, I couldn't get mad at Maddy for leaving Jason when both of them were 18. I hated the way she did it and practically left without explanation, but I understood her reason and fears. I wish she had stayed and talked about what was bothering her though. For me, she wasn't the bad guy.

Overall, the book was more good. I feel like Jason and Maddy's relationship throughout the book was like a machine that needed oil and never got it. Their flow wasn't smooth and they hit too many bumps. Still, that didn't make the book bad. Not from the way I see it. I enjoyed it and I laughed at Max's crazy plans. Each chapter began with a quote from the book he published and made him famous and they were fun. I know this is not his book, but for me, he stole the show.

You.” A woman’s voice called behind him, and he turned to see the cupcake girl marching toward him. She was still wearing that black-and-white frilly apron. With her blond ringlets flying around her delicate face and flinty sparks in her gray eyes, Hunter felt like he was about to be attacked by a sexy Goldilocks.
He searched behind him as she approached, to make sure she wasn’t talking to someone else. “Me?”
She stopped in front of him, a little out of breath from her march down the street. Her chest lifted and fell intriguingly over the white apron lace, but her rosebud mouth was pursed tightly and Hunter took a step back. He had seen that look on women before. Goldilocks was not happy.
Yes, you,” she said through gritted teeth. “You lied to me. You’re not a tourist.”
Uh,” Hunter glanced around for a moment. “I’m not?”
No, you’re not.” She stepped in close, grabbing the pastry box out of his hand. She peered inside and glared up at him in accusation. “And of course. You had to go and eat all three of them, didn’t you?”
He blinked. “But, I paid for them, remember?”
That’s not the point. You. Ate. Them.”
Yes,” he said carefully. Maybe Goldilocks liked to spike her morning porridge. “They were delicious?”
Ugh.” She stomped her foot and he tried not to smile. She was irritated, yes, but so damn adorable. Even if she was a little bit odd.
You shouldn’t have eaten them because you weren’t being honest with me. You’re not just a tourist passing through. You’re the new owner of that.” She pointed to the empty waterfront building that would soon be his fancy new café and restaurant.
Yes.” He held out his hand and gave her his best smile. “I’m Hunter Kane.”
She frowned back at him, ignoring his hand. “I know who you are. And you should have told me that before I gave you those Sweet Success cupcakes.”
Why?”
Because I own Fairy Cakes, and now your business is going to take away all my customers.” She looked so upset that Hunter felt a twinge of pity for her, even though she was being ridiculous. Competition was the name of the game in any industry, and restaurant ownership was no exception. “Look, I’m sorry you feel that way, but it’s just business. And why would my eating your chocolate cupcakes be a problem anyway? It’s not like I’m going to steal the recipe or something.”
Ha,” she scoffed. “As if you ever could. My cupcakes are special, and everyone on this island knows it.”
Oh . . . kay.” He still wasn’t quite sure what she was getting at.
And now you’ve gone and eaten them.” She threw her hands up in the air.
Hunter frowned down at her. “Well, excuse me, ma’am. I thought that was the whole point of buying them.”
She jammed her hands onto her hips. “First of all, I’m twenty-five years old. Don’t call me ‘ma’am.’ Save it for old ladies with lapdogs.”
Fine, Cupcake.” He shouldn’t have said it. He knew it. But something about her righteous indignation made him want to tease her. She gasped, her eyes narrowing on him like an angry feline. He was so dead.

She’d thought her inability to let him go meant she was weak, but it had never been as simple as missing him—missing the habit of him. No, he was embedded in her. And she knew that because being in his arms felt exactly like coming home after living out of a suitcase and sleeping on strange, uncomfortable mattresses for far too long.
A strong hand cupped her chin, aligning their mouths. That first hit of contact—the heat and indescribable softness of his tongue—made her blood sizzle. His hands swept down her back, cupping her ass, and pressing her hard against him.
He kissed her deeply, lavishly, like he thought she might leave and he had to get in as much of her as he could. And that drove her wild. His possessive grip told her he wanted her with every fiber of his being. The same way she wanted him.
Her heart pounded so furiously it hurt, and she needed to feel him everywhere. She ran her fingers through his scruff, cupped the back of his neck, and rocked her hips against him. Desperation clawed at her, the need to get closer, deeper, be swallowed up so they could finally join with their whole bodies and souls.
His hand pushed under the elastic waistband of her leggings and gripped her bare ass.
“You better want this, wild thing.” The growl in his voice set her on fire. “Tell me right the fuck now.”
Her blood raced so fast she could hardly find the breath to speak, but he wouldn’t touch her until she answered, so she pushed out a, Yes.

When I thought of words to describe the book the first words that came to my mind were weird, unique and something that I haven't read before. My genre is romance and this book is closer to fantasy than romance. Fantasy is not my genre because there is something about it that doesn't click for me. I did enjoy the book though. I plan to read the next one since the story doesn't end in this book and it will continue for at least one more. Maybe I will be able to dive into this world and actually understand what is going on in book two. The underwater world Stella, our heroine, finds herself in is still a mystery to me (and to her). Since I am not familiar with this author, I can only hope that the answers we will get will be satisfying. I will also be looking forward to some character development and some heat of the romance department.  Colin and Stella have a thing going on between them, but sometimes I felt like they were just two friends who were exploring. The book created more questions than it answered and I have high hopes for the second book. Beath felt like the first chapter in a long story.  I am not saying that in a bad way.

Blurb

I’m one puff piece away from tearing up my journalism degree and hurling my laptop into the Hudson River. So when I smell a juicy story brewing at my brother’s Wall Street investment firm, I’ll do whatever it takes to get my scoop.

One clever disguise later, I’m deep undercover as the firm’s newest broker, simultaneously gathering intel and spouting off stock tips like a boss.

Go me, right?

Sure, it sounds good on paper, but there’s a catch: The actual boss.

Chief Executive Panty-melter Jack Holt is cocky. Infuriating. And one smoldering look has me ready to violate every rule in the employee handbook.

Thank God my assignment has an expiration date. Because falling for my brother’s best friend and business partner is a lose-lose proposition. Right?

***

In the market for a hot tip? Here’s one.

Don’t bang your best friend’s little sister. Especially when she’s an investigative journalist and your company is the target of her latest exposé.

Unfortunately I’ve got a hard-on for high-risk bets, and I’m more than eager to invest my considerable stock holdings in Ellie Seyfried’s… ahem… glorious assets.

Friends with fringe benefits is a sweet deal, but it’s not long before I’m falling harder than the post-bubble Nasdaq, hooked on Ellie’s sweet smile and determination to make the world a better place.

There’s only one problem…

When it comes to risking my money, I’ve mastered every trick in the book. But how the hell do I risk my heart?

Review:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The novel was on the feminist side of things. Ellie is working undercover in order to find enough data that prove that no matter how hard her brother tries the female and male employees aren't getting paid the same. I liked that aspect of the book since it felt real to me and I found myself been more curious about Ellie's undercover job than her romance with Jack. It was rather underwhelming mostly because I was expecting something more forbidden and Ellie's brother to have some kind of reaction to the news of his sister man. It was a tame story. On the plus side though, the book was good. It made me keep reading past the time I had set to go to sleep and Ellie and Jack had an easy and light romance. At some point in the story, I couldn't exactly understand why Ellie was acting the way she was and that's the reason I am not giving the final star to the book. The parts were Ellie was pretending to be a man were fun.

BLURB:

One wouldn’t expect a sexy-as-sin rocker like Eli Renard to spend time with a woman just as a friend, but that’s exactly what Emersyn Wallace is to him. Just a friend. Even though she’s matured into a beauty, Eli still doesn’t remotely see his childhood pal as a sex-object. When tragedy brings her back into his world, Eli moves mountains to help Emersyn get back onto her feet by finding her a job as a backup singer for Jacob’s Ladder. At first, Eli is thrilled that Emerysn is along on tour, and he sets out to do his best to help her forget her sorrow through a range of crazy friend dates. But after spending so much time with her in such close quarters, Eli finds his feelings beginning to shift. He no longer sees Emersyn as the once awkward young girl he played some of his first songs with. Soon it’s not only his body that reacts to her, but it’s also his heart. He’s about to learn what a dangerous game it is to dry a widow’s tears.

After losing her husband and singing partner in a tragic accident, Emersyn Wallace spent the last eight months drowning in a sea of grief. With the bills piling up and her family and friends concerned about her emotional welfare, she reluctantly agrees to join the Jacob’s Ladder’s tour. While recapturing her lost love of singing and performing, she finds both comfort and healing in Eli’s gregarious personality and outrageous sense of humor. But as the anniversary of her husband’s death approaches, she finds herself in turmoil over her new amorous feelings for Eli.

Can Eli and Emersyn find the perfect melody to transition from friends to lovers, or will their relationship end out of tune?

Review:

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

I stopped reading this book a little before the 30% mark. I just couldn't get into it and the more I read the worse it got for me. Emersyn was still grieving her husband who had died 9 months before and I couldn't buy the idea of her moving on. She loved her husband deeply and he was a great guy. I didn't (and I still don't) think that she could just wake up some day anytime soon and be ready to have something more with another man. If the main part of the story had begun a couple of years late I might have thought differently. Eli's behavior also didn't help me get into the book and when I read that he had slept with another woman around the 25% mark on my kindle, I gave up. I don't understand why that had to be included after a quarter of the story was gone. The fact that neither of them (Eli and Emersyn) had any romantic feelings towards each other made me question how rushed things would be later on. Emersyn did feel some kind of jealousy after the redhead incident, but it was just a spark. 1/3 of the book was gone and the characters were just friends who only had platonic love to give. If there had been something between them or something one-sided at least, I might have differently. I could have given a second chance to this book, but with life kicking my arse I didn't want to waste my time on a book that wasn't for me.
