Review:

I gave this book 4.5 stars which is more stars than I have given to the last five books I have read. The Affiliate is a good YA book that won't disappoint the readers and is a great beginning for the series.

The cover of The Affiliate is the prettiest covers of the books K.A. Linde has published so far. I like how you can see a girl wearing a red dress which is something that comes from the story and means something to the reader. The whole thing has been set up real nice and I think that in paperback it will look awesome.

To be honest in the early parts of the story I was worried about the possibility of a love triangle between Edric, Cyrene, and Edric's brother whose name I think was Kael, but fortunately that wasn't the case. Crane falls in love with Edric and he certainly favors her. I want to see them together in the end, but we have the obstacle of Edric's wife. And for some reason I can't imagine them ending together, even though I want them to. I wouldn't mind if the author decided to kill her in the next book. It's not like anyone can like her anyway.

The thing with this story though is not the romance, but how Cyrene tries to live a life as an Affiliate for the queen and discover the secrets about magic and the book she was given. You see some of the life in court and some romance, but that's not the whole story.

While I am entering the book's world fairly quickly that I felt some things needed further explanation. For example, I was reading about Rhea and what she meant to Cyrene, but I don't think that it was mentioned who Rhea was. Also, I feel like Cyrene could have explained how the system works in her world and what each class does. We see some of the history of this place though, and I hope that in book two it will be explored more since Cyrene is going to look for answers.

I think that the author made quite obvious who is the son, the dying King reveals the secrets to in the prologue. I have a theory that the son is using some of the Affiliates to find people like Cyrene. I won't try to explore more things in this review because I might reveal some major spoilers.

Before the prologue the author wrote a list of some of the names in the story and how they are pronounced. The story has some weird names so it was very useful and I found myself wanting to check it a few times to see if I was pronouncing it correctly.
