don't understand why would anyone list this book as the 4.5th one in the series (that might change, but currently is #4.5). It's a prequel and none of the couples we know and love is together at the time. Alexa is a friend of Caterina's and Caterina visits the Contes. It worked quite nicely as a prequel and it got extra points for that. The story ends with Alexa getting the book and you know how that story goes

As for the characters, I feel like we learn who Caterina is from the very first few pages, but we learn who the real Rip is after he returns to the winery. I honestly wasn't sure if Rip was the man who fit all the criteria Caterina named in her spell, but once he went back where he belonged I saw that he truly was a man worthy of her. Of course, Caterina is also worthy of him. She explains early on why she left and why she never went back to her father.

Overall the story was good and I was a nice journey. After many years I revisited this series which is special to me and I am very happy that the author gave me the chance to do that. If you are familiar with the series you must read this and if you are not you can still read it and get into this world. It can be read as stand-alone so no worries. If you haven't read the series I would recommend to begin with this book.
